Welcome to Tamerlane!

Born in modern day Uzbekistan in 1336, the legendary warlord Tamerlane (Amir Timur, Амир Темур, Тамерлан), a descendant of Genghis Khan, conquered the Eurasian Steppe and built an empire that stretched from Central Asia to the Middle East, India, Persia, and Turkey. As the nomadic conqueror expanded his lands through conquest, Tamerlane developed and integrated trading networks from China to Europe and beyond, with his capital Samarkand emerging as the commercial center of the famed Silk Road.

Tamerlane is a fitting national symbol for the resurgent Uzbekistan, a vibrant and dynamic country that stands ready to play a leading role in Central Asia while expanding beyond regional borders and connecting with markets in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. After decades of isolation, Uzbekistan, with a young and growing population of 35 million, a diversified economy, and a government committed to reform, has reemerged in global affairs and markets, and is poised for rapid growth.

Tamerlane is a free weekly newsletter dedicated to Uzbekistan’s financial, economic, and political transformations. Every week, Tamerlane will provide updates on key news and developments in markets, macroeconomics, business, and politics in Uzbekistan and around the Central Asia region. It will also highlight important statistics and indicators on the Uzbek market and economy, from local stock market and treasuries trading data to inflation and GDP.
